Bethel 87, Macalester 75

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Bethel received 31 points from Matt Fredrickson, 23 points from Charles Meadowcroft and eight assists from Trent Perry, and went on to beat visiting Macalester 87-75 Saturday afternoon. The Royals up their record to 10-6 overall and 5-6 in the MIAC, while Macalester is now 4-12 overall, 3-8 in MIAC play. The Royals shot 47% from the field (29-for-62), 39% from three-point range (10-for-26) and 79% from the free throw line (19-for-24), and enjoyed a 14-7 turnover advantage.

Fredrickson went 9-for-13 from the floor, 5-for-9 from behind the arc, and 8-for-8 from the foul line.

A steal and three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer turned a slight Macalester lead into a 40-38 Bethel advantage at the intermission. The Scots opened the second half with a three-pointer but the Royals never trailed after that, extending a narrow lead through most of the second half to nine points at 64-55 with 7:08 to play. The decisive stretch saw Bethel run off nine straight points to turn a 66-61 lead at 6:03 into a safe 75-61 advantage with just 3:16 left.

Tom Conboy went 11-for-19 from the field and finished with 25 points and three assists to pace Macalester. Brendan Bosman added 20 points. Lars Johnson handed out six assists and Jesse Hollander hustled for five offensive rebounds.

The Scots play at first-place St. Thomas Wednesday (Jan. 25) at 8 p.m. The Royals are off until next Saturday (Jan. 28) when they play at Augsburg at 3:15 p.m.
