Augustana 85, North Central (Ill.) 79

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Rick Harrigan scored 29 points to lead ninth rated Augustana to an 85-79 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin victory over 13th ranked North Central but it was his final seven points that made the biggest difference in the contest. The Vikings trailed by two points (76-73) with 1:51 left when Harrigan made one free throw to cut the lead to 76-74. When he missed the second Dain Swetalla was there to collar the rebound and lay it in to tie the game at 76-76.

Then, Harrigan absolutely took over. He grabbed a rebound when North Central’s Mitch Raridon missed a shot at 1:18 and with 1:00 showing on the clock he buried a three point field goal to put Augustana ahead 79-76. Anthony Simmons then missed a three point attempt for the Cardinals and Swetalla rebounded it and got it into the hands of point guard Drew Wessels. Wessels was fouled with :30 left and he made both free throws to up the advantage to 81-76.

Raridon nailed a three with :11 left but Harrigan was fouled on the inbound pass and he drilled both his free throws with eight seconds to go to make it 83-79. To cap off the evening Harrigan stole a pass from Adam Krumtinger and made a layup with two seconds remaining to make the final 85-79.

At halftime Harrigan was just five of 14 from the field and 1-4 from three point range for 11 points. In the second half he made five of 10 from the floor and three of five from three point range. He also hit five of six free throws in the final 20 minutes.

North Central led 40-34 at halftime and early in the game enjoyed an 11 point margin (22-11 at 10:41). Augustana did not take the lead until Harrigan hit a three point field goal at 12:27 to make it 50-47. His three pointer at 10:29 gave the Vikings their biggest lead of the night at 58-52 and that capped a 20-6 run.

The Cardinals had four players in double figures with Krumtinger leading the way with 20 while Simmons had 19, Ray Vicario 14 and Dan Walton 11. Krumtinger grabbed 11 rebounds as North Central enjoyed a 35-29 edge in that department.

Jay McAdams-Thornton had 15 points and a team high 16 rebounds for Augustana. Wessels had five assists and directed a Viking offense that only committed six turnovers on the night.

Augustana is now 16-1 overall and 6-0 in the CCIW while North Central falls to 14-2 and 3-2.
