Cortland State 62, Plattsburgh State 41

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Junior Dave Maggiacomo (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) scored 17 points and senior Scott Taggart (Sidney Center/Franklin) grabbed 19 rebounds, the most by a Red Dragon in eight seasons, as Cortland defeated Plattsburgh, 62-41. Cortland extended its winning streak to 14 games and is currently 14-1 overall, 7-0 in SUNYAC play. Plattsburgh drops to 8-6 overall and 2-4 in the league with the setback.

Maggiacomo made 4-of-9 three-pointers and continued his run of scoring in double figures in every game this season despite coming off the bench. Taggart recorded 13 rebounds in the first half, and his 19 boards are the highest by a Cortland player since Frank Hodge’s 20 caroms at Oneonta in the 1996-97 season.

Senior Frank Ranieri (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) finished with 11 points, 12 rebounds and three assists, junior Rod Headley (Peekskill) added 12 points and Taggart finished with nine points.

Senior Kris Gibbs-Smith (Rochester/John Marshall) finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots for the Cardinals. Junior Jerrad Dumont (Chateaugay/North Country CC) scored eight points, all in the opening half.

Plattsburgh made four of its first seven three-point attempts, including two by Dumont, and took a 14-5 lead seven minutes into the game. After Cortland closed within 14-13 over the next four minutes, Gibbs-Smith hit a trey to up the lead to four with 8:19 remaining. Plattsburgh, however, did not make a three-pointer the rest of the evening and finished 5-of-23 (22 percent) from behind the arc.

Cortland completed the first half on an 18-4 run and led 31-21 at the break. Headley scored eight points during that stretch, and Maggiacomo completed the run with a steal and three-pointer with 45 seconds left.

Plattsburgh drew as close as 37-32 with 10:52 left in the game on a Gibbs-Smith free throw, but Cortland put the game away with a 13-0 streak over the next four-plus minutes.
