SUNYIT 102, Cazenovia 79

UTICA, N.Y. — In two of the closest games of the season, the Cazenovia College Wildcats men’s and women’s basketball teams split with the SUNY IT Wildcats on Thurs., Jan. 19, in Utica, N.Y.

The Cazenovia women’s team opened the non-conference double-header with a 79-66 win over SUNY IT. With the win, Cazenovia improves to 3-10 on the year and remains 2-4 in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play. SUNY IT falls to 2-10 on the year with the loss.

SUNY IT jumped out to an early eight-point lead in the first five minutes of play by pulling ahead 3-11. Negating the deficit, the visiting Wildcats squad went on a run of its own and pulled ahead by 10 points after Ashley Lewis (’07, Whitesboro / Whitesboro HS) drained a three from the corner at the 8:00 minute mark. SUNY IT battled back before the intermission to regain a 33-34 advantage after back-to-back Kieran Burns three-pointers to close the first stanza.

The second half found SUNY IT pulling away from Cazenovia to the tune of a game-high 14-point advantage for the home Wildcats at the 8:35 mark of the second half. Trailing 46-60, Cazenovia went on a defiant 33-6 run to close the game and record the 79-66 win.

The game featured 12 lead changes and six ties.

Lewis finished the game with a team-high 20 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the winning effort. In each of the Wildcat’s three wins this season, Lewis has been Cazenovia’s leading scorer.

Stephanie Stokes and Burns scored 47 of SUNY IT’s 66 points. Stokes finished with a team-high and game-high 25 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks an assist and a steal. Burns finished with 22 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal. The three other SUNY IT starters only managed to muster a combined eight points in the losing effort.

Emilie Welch (’09, Hilton / Hilton HS), coming off of the bench, had 12 points, five rebounds and an assist. Welch, a freshmen center for Cazenovia, drew critical fouls on both Burns and Stokes in the final minutes that forced the duo, both finishing with four personal fouls, to sit during critical times over the second half.

The Cazenovia Wildcats women’s squad has won three of its last four games on the season.

The men’s team, after jumping out to 49-45 half-time lead, succumbed to superior SUNY IT rebounding. Second-chance opportunities resulted in a SUNY IT 79-102 win. With the loss, Cazenovia falls to 3-12 on the season and remain 2-4 in NEAC play. SUNY IT improves to 8-5 on the year.

SUNY IT finished the game with 34 rebounds on offensive and 27 rebounds on the defensive glass for 61 total rebounds on the night. Cazenovia, who finished the game with 33 total rebounds, was out-rebounded by a season-high 28-board margin.

Four of the five Cazenovia Wildcat starters finished in double-figures. The Cazenovia front-court team of Bryan Bishop (’06, Watertown / South Jefferson HS), Steven Harris (’09, Watervliet / Watervliet HS) and Sedric Hawkins (’06, Syracuse / Henninger HS) finished with 22 points, 19 points and 11 points, respectively. Bishop continued to his season-trend of high-percentage shooting by going 9-for-12 from the field.

The Cazenovia point-guard, Joshua Winans (’07, Afton / Afton HS), who was the forth of the four visiting Wildcats in double-figures, finished the game with 16 points and a team-high four assists.

Four SUNY IT Wildcats finished in double-figures, as well. Chris Laboard, who finished led the way for SUNY IT, finished the game with a game-high 33 points and 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Laboard was 14-for-26 from the field and 4-for-7 from behind the three-point arc in the game.

SUNY IT is the third team to break 100 points against the Cazenovia Wildcats this season.

Cazenovia returns home on Sat., Jan. 21, to face Keystone College. The men’s game is slated for 1:00 PM and the women’s game is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
