LeTourneau 70, Austin 68

SHERMAN, TX — After leading by as many as 17 points in the second half, it took a Dewones Smith block with two seconds left in regulation to secure the 70-68 victory for the LeTourneau University men’s basketball team on Thursday night at Austin College in an American Southwest Conference East Division game.
The YellowJackets (6-8, 5-7) defeated the ‘Roos (1-15, 0-13) on the road for the first time since joining the ASC in 1998. LETU controlled the game for much of the first half behind a strong defensive and rebounding effort as the Jackets limited Austin College to just 36.7 percent shooting and grabbed 10 offensive rebounds. The Jackets went into halftime with a 37-30 lead.
The second half started the same way as the first half with LeTourneau gradually expanding their lead, eventually getting a double figure lead. It appeared that the Jackets would cruise to an easy victory, but the ‘Roos did not get the memo and continued to battle. Anthony Holman and Kyle May led the comeback for Austin College as the two combined for 42 points in the game.
A Dusty Evers three-pointer with five minutes left in the game gave the Jackets a 70-59 lead, but the team would not score again the rest of the way. Fortunately, Smith was there at the end of the game to swat away May’s last second chance to tie the score.
Evers led the Jackets with 19 points and 11 rebounds, his second double-double of the season. He made 9-of-19 shots from the floor and led the team with three assists and two blocks. Sophomore Jay Burnett continued his solid play with 13 points, including three three-pointers while Smith added 11 points and six rebounds. LeTourneau shot 39.7 percent from the field and made just 14-of-23 free throws. The Jackets were able to take advantage of 16 offensive rebounds and the fact that they committed just 15 turnovers in the game.
Holman led the ‘Roos with 24 points and 11 rebounds while May came off the bench to score 18 points and dished off a game-high four assists. AC shot 41.8 percent from the floor and went 18-of-27 from the foul line.
The YellowJackets are back on the road on Saturday afternoon at the University of the Ozarks as they try to extend their winning streak to three games. Tip-off is at 3 o’clock and the game can be heard online at www.tsrnsports.com.
