WAYNE, NJ — Sophomore forward Larry Leverett (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) finished with career highs of 16 points and eight rebounds as William Paterson pulled away in the second half and defeated New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Rutgers-Camden, 91-73, for its ninth straight victory Wednesday night at the William Paterson Rec Center.NJAC Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors

Senior forward Larry Press (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) also had career highs with 12 points and six rebounds for the Pioneers (12-3, 7-2 NJAC), who received scoring from 11 different players and remained in a first-place tie atop the NJAC. Senior center Nick Torres (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) and junior forward Luis Martinez (Passaic, NJ/Clifton) added 14 points apiece in the victory as William Paterson shot 55.6 percent (35-of-63) and held a 50-30 edge on the glass.
Freshman guard Wayne Smalls (Camden, NJ/Medical Arts) led all scorers with 19 points and added four steals for the Scarlet Raptors (1-14, 0-9 NJAC). Freshman forward Antoine Miller (Camden, NJ/Medical Arts) finished with 14 points off the bench and sophomore guard Amir Fantroyal (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) had a solid all-around game with 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals.
William Paterson trailed late in the first half, but rallied to take a 43-41 lead into the locker room after committing 15 first-half turnovers. After Rutgers-Camden scored the first bucket of the second half, the Pioneers scored 27 of the next 34 points. Martinez scored nine of those points while sophomore guard Joey Spiegel (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) had four points and three assists during the spurt. Meanwhile, the Scarlet Raptors shot just 28.2 percent in the second half (11-of-39), including 2-of-15 on 3-pointers (13.3 percent).
Junior guard Dane Nicholson (Plesantville, NJ/Holy Spirit) contributed 11 points and six steals for Rutgers-Camden in the loss.
William Paterson resumes action Saturday, January 21, when it travels to Ewing to face NJAC rival The College of New Jersey at 3 p.m. Rutgers-Camden hosts league adversary Rutgers-Newark the same day and time.
