Washington and Jefferson 108, Westminster (Pa.) 86

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Junior guard Brandon Studer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) led five Presidents in double figures with 22 points as Washington & Jefferson shot 58 percent (44-of-76) and cruised to a 108-86 victory over Westminster in PAC men’s basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Henry Memorial Center.

Junior guard Jon Koch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Presidents (5-12, 3-1 PAC), who never trailed in the contest.

Junior forward Matt Vorndran (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) scored eight of the first 10 W&J points as the Presidents assumed a 10-3 lead in the first two minutes. W&J stretched its advantage to 24-14 six minutes later following sophomore guard Greg Stuckey’s (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) jumper.

Senior guard Chris Sheehan (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) canned a pair of free throws at the 6:16 mark to make it a 39-26 lead and Koch’s lay-up just before halftime gave W&J a 54-43 edge after 20 minutes.

Junior forward Kevin Bringman’s (Fairview Park, Ohio/St. Edward’s) lay-up four minutes into the second half pushed the lead to 20 points (67-47) and W&J led by as many as 28 points late in the game.

Studer made 8-of-14 shots from the floor, while Vorndran nailed 7-of-10 attempts and finished with 14 points and five boards. Sophomore center Tony Lewis (Mayfield Hts., Ohio/Orange) added 14 points and four rebounds off the bench and Bringman closed the double-figure scorers with 10.

The Presidents held a 46-36 rebounding advantage and dished out a season-high 31 assists. Freshman point guard Nate Burton (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) dished out seven helpers.

Craig Hannon led the Titans (4-12, 1-3 PAC) with 24 points. He nailed 7-of-15 three-point attempts. Westminster shot 41 percent (31-of-76), but only managed to hit 12-of-44 from beyond the arc.

Washington & Jefferson, which holds a 4-2 record so far in January, returns to action on Saturday at Thiel College. Tip-off is set for 3:00 pm.
