Washington College 78, McDaniel 75

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Host Washington College came back from a six-point deficit in the final minutes to play to rally past visiting McDaniel College, 78-75, in a Centennial Conference men's basketball game this evening at Cain Athletic Center. The Shoremen, who got 18 points a piece from senior forward Jonathan Webb and senior guard Travis Moore, improved to 8-8 overall and 6-3 in Centennial play with the win. The Green Terror slipped to 6-10 and 4-5 with the loss.

Washington, which led by as many as eight points in the first half, held a 60-55 lead with 11:01 remaining in the first half, but a 18-7 spurt by McDaniel, capped off by a lay-up and free throw by Will Talesnick with 3:16 remaining, gave the Green Terror a 73-67 advantage.

The Shoremen came roaring back with a 9-0 run in the next 3:08. Moore hit a jumper with 2:48 remaining to cut the lead to 73-69. Junior forward Joey Breslin drained a three-pointer on the Shoremen's next possession to trim the lead to 73-72. After a missed jump shot by Josh McKay, Moore scored on a lay-up after receiving a pass from Webb out of the high post with 59 seconds to play to make it 74-73 in favor of the Shoremen.

The Green Terror had the ball with 36 seconds left with a chance to take the lead, but a three-point try by Mike Dipiero rimmed out and Washington senior guard Kyle Stem collected the rebound and was fouled. Stem made both free throws to extend the lead to 76-73 with 17 seconds to play. A lay-up by Will Talesnick on the other end cut the lead to 76-75 with nine seconds to go. Moore was fouled with seven seconds left and made both shots to push the lead back to 78-75. On McDaniel's final trip down the court, the Green Terror lost control of the ball, but got possession when it went out of bounds off a Shoreman defender. A desperation shot by Chris Rutland at the buzzer rimmed out.

Webb shared game-high rebounding honors by collecting 11 boards to go along with his 18 points. Moore, who is leading the Centennial Conference in free throw shooting at 94.4% (34-of-36), scored his 18 points in 21 minutes of play. Stem drained three three-pointers in six attempts en route to 13 points, while senior guard Dustin Abbate added 12 points. Breslin added nine points, while senior guard Drew Hill dished out a team-high five assists.

McKay led the Green Terror with 16 points and 11 boards. Talesnick finished with 15 points, while Chad Arrington contributed 12 points off the bench. Dipiero tallied 10 points and dished out a game-high five assists.

Washington shot 10-of-22 from beyond the three-point arc in the game, including 7-of-12 in the first half. The Green Terror shot 48% from the field to the Shoremen's 41%, but shot just 9-of-16 from the free throw line.

Washington's win, coupled with a Swarthmore win over Haverford tonight, gave the Shoremen sole possession of third place in the conference standings. McDaniel is tied for fifth in the league with Gettysburg.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Muhlenberg.
