Maryville (Mo.) 74, Westminster (Mo.) 61

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Maryville University men’s basketball team defeated Westminster College 74-61 as the Saints remain undefeated in the SLIAC. The victory improves the Saints to 4-0 in the conference and 9-5 overall while Westminster falls to 5-9 overall.

In the two team’s last meeting, Westminster sank a fade away jumper at the buzzer to win the game, but the Saints were back for revenge this year. Maryville took the lead at 17:36 in the first half and held it until 7:36 when Westminster came back to tie, but a layup by Matt McCarthy shortly after gave the Saints the lead which they did not let go of for the rest of the game.

Maryville’s Ben Hebl recorded his first double-double of the season recording 14 points and 11 assists. The senior guard went 4-for-10 from the three point arc while tallying a team-high five steals.

Along with Hebl, three other Maryville players scored in double figures in tonight’s game. Matt Regan and Matt McCarthy led the Saints with 16 points a piece with Regan adding six rebounds as well. Casey Holland ended with 10 points in just 11 minutes of playing time.

Helping on the boards was Stephen Bash who had a team-high eight rebounds and finished with six points, four assists, and two steals. Tim Elwell recorded a game-high seven assists.

Westminster’s David McDorman led his team in scoring with 13 points while Dylan Schram and Kurt Kuschel each added 11 and 10 points respectively as the Blue Jays dropped to 2-2 in the SLIAC with the loss.

Next up for the Saints is Blackburn College as the Saints will compete at the Beaver’s home court. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
