The win gave the Blue Jays their first victory over F&M since a 68-65 win at Goldfarb Gym on Feb. 22, 2003. The Diplomats took the previous five games in the series, including two years' worth of season sweeps.
Hopkins junior T.J. Valerio led all scorers with his 24 points. Valerio finished the game shooting 6-of-10 from behind the three-point arc. The Blue Jays also got a career night from Scott Weisenfeld, with 15 points and seven assists. Danny Nawrocki added his second double-double in as many games, and his sixth this season with a 12-point, 12-rebound effort. Matt Griffin chipped in 15 points and nine rebounds.
Hopkins eclipsed the 50 percent shooting mark for the ninth time in 10 games, hitting on 25-of-49 (51.0%) attempts from the field.
Five F&M scorers reached double-figures, led by Bryan Teschke with 21. Teschke connected on 6-of-6 tries from the free throw line. Brandon Smith posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Logan Outerbridge, Derek Hines and Adam Leonard added 13, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Blue Jays built a 43-27 halftime advantage on the strength of a 19-4 run in the game's opening 10 minutes, keyed by seven points from Griffin.
Five of Hopkins' next seven field goals in the next four minutes of play came by way of the three-pointer, including three from Valerio, who finished the opening period with 17 points.
But the Diplomats responded early in the second half, outscoring the Blue Jays 30-13 to take a 57-56 lead at the 9:07 mark. Outerbridge helped spark the Diplomats with 11 points during the stretch, including three treys. Hopkins responded with a pair of buckets to go up for good at 60-57 with 8:49 remaining.
F&M made 14-of-28 second half field goals, including 6-of-12 from behind the arc. For the game, the Diplomats made 36.4 percent of their tries from the floor.
