John Carroll 96, Mount Union 66

UNIVERSITY HTS., Oh — An 11-1 run to open the game set the tone early, and John Carroll finished what it started in a 96-66 romp over Mount Union this evening at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.

From the start, the Blue Streaks put pressure on the Purple Raiders, forcing the visitors into 10 first half turnovers en route to building a 23-point halftime lead (50-27). Breaking out of a prolonged shooting slump, John Carroll made 19 of its 33 first half shot attempts (.576) in the first 20 minutes.

At one point in the opening half, Mount Union closed to within 24-18 on a Chris Switzer lay-up at the 7:24 mark. But JCU closed out the first half on a 26-9 run, and was never threatened in the second half.

For the game, the Blue Streaks caused 26 Purple Raider turnovers while only committing nine.

In snapping a two-game losing streak in which it was outscored by 38 points, John Carroll (10-6, 6-3 OAC) took out its frustrations by matching its largest margin of victory this season. Pete Moran led the way with 17 points and seven assists. He was joined in double figures by Chris Day and Derek Smith, each with 14 points, and John Curran with 12. JCU finished the game with a field goal percentage above 50 percent (38-71, .535) for the first first time at home since December 3 against Wilmington.

Mount Union (5-11, 4-5 OAC), which had its modest three-game winning streak halted this evening, got a game high 22 points from Switzer, who shot 9-14 from the field, and 3-6 from the arc. Kyle Karpinski (12) abd Josh Long (10) also scored in double figures for the Purple Raiders.
