The Eagles, who entered the game in sole possession of first place in the Capital Athletic Conference, were ahead 63-56 with 4:37 remaining, but then missed their next four attempts from the field and committed a pair of turnovers. The Gophers (1-13, 1-4 CAC) took advantage of the situation and went on a 9-2 run, pulling into a 65-65 tie with 1:38 left to play on a lay-up by Tim Merritt .
The score was still tied at 65 when the Eagles (9-6, 4-1 CAC) gained possession of the ball with :36 showing on the clock. They used up nearly all of the shot clock, but the possession ended with Mike Lee connecting on his only field goal of the contest to put Mary Washington back in the lead, 67-65, with :04 remaining.
Garritt's game-winning basket capped a career-high 32-point performance by the senior guard, who was 13-for-23 from the field, including 6-for-8 from three-point range. He was also credited with six assists, five rebounds and four steals in the victory.
Garritt also landed a three-point basket just before time expired in the first half to create a 34-34 tie at the break. The lead changed hands a total of 10 times in the second half.
The only time a Goucher player has scored more points in a game against Mary Washington was the 38-point effort by David Clark on Feb. 15, 1992.
Two other players scored in double figures for Goucher: Ryan Moreland and James Russo contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively, to the victory.
Justin Baker and Matt Treacy shared scoring honors for Mary Washington with 18 points apiece.
The Gophers now have a two-game winning streak against Mary Washington and hold a 17-15 edge in the all-time series with the Eagles.
