Simpson 77, Dubuque 72

Dubuque, Iowa — Ryan Hittenmiller scored 29 points as Simpson (8-8, 4-3 IIAC) defeated Dubuque (8-6, 1-6 IIAC) 77-72 in overtime Jan. 18 in Dubuque. The Storm led by as much as 12 in the second half and led 60-53 with 3:31 to go, but the Spartans battled back, tying the score at 63 with 12 seconds remaining on a pair of Luke Stotmeister free throws. The Storm had the final possession of regulation, but Jason Parkinson could not convert his field goal attempt at the buzzer.

The teams exchanged the lead on three occasions in the extra frame, but the Storm took the lead for good on a Hittenmiller jumper with 55 seconds remaining. Tyler Dougherty attempted a three-pointer on the next Dubuque possession, but missed. Scott Ellens got the rebound passing the ball to Parkinson who was fouled. He made both of his free throw attempts, giving the Storm a four-point lead. Dubuque attempted another three-pointer the next time down, but James Scott missed. Ellens again got the rebound and he was fouled. Ellens made both free throw attempts to give Simpson a 75-69 lead. Dougherty committed a turnover which led to a Hittenmiller dunk to make it 77-69. Dougherty made a three with six seconds to go to make it the final 77-72.

Hittenmiller, who was playing just down the road from his hometown of Dyersville, Iowa (approx 20 minutes away), was 10-for-14 from the floor and 7-for-11 from the free throw line to post a new career high. He also grabbed eight rebounds. Ellens charted a season high 15 points and led the Storm with nine rebounds. Parkinson had 11 for the Storm. The Spartans were led by Stotmeister and Nick Thomas who each scored 20 points. Dougherty scored 19. Simpson outrebounded Dubuque 48-46 despite playing without the Iowa Conference's leading rebounder, Jason Soppe. Soppe, who leads the Storm in scoring (16.0) and rebounding (9.1), injured his foot Jan. 14 against Cornell.
