Catholic 69, York (Pa.) 67

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The York College men’s basketball team let a nine-point lead late in the second half slip away as the Catholic University Cardinals earned a 69-67 overtime win over the Spartans in a Capital Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday night in Washington, DC. The Cardinals improve to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in the CAC with the win while the Spartans fall to 13-2 overall and 3-2 in the league. The Spartans’ eight-game win streak ends with the loss.

After the Spartans took a 4-0 lead just a minute into the game, the Cardinals outscored York 15-0 over the next five and a half minutes to forge a 15-4 lead. The Cardinals maintained their lead between eight and 11 points over the next six minutes and led 22-11 with 8:12 left in the half. A Kenny Fass (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown) triple ignited a 13-0 Spartan run that gave the visitors a 24-22 lead with 2:47 on the clock. The Cardinals scored five of the next seven points but Brian Singer hit a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left in the half to give the Spartans a 28-27 lead at the intermission.

The second half continued the back-and-forth play as their were two ties and five lead changes in the first four minutes of the half. With the game tied at 35, Fass hit a lay up to start a 15-6 run that gave the green and white a nine point advantage. That lead grew to 11 at 57-46 with 6:40 remaining. The Cardinals then slowly started to climb back into the contest. A Patrick Dwyer lay up began the comeback with a lay up with 5:27 left. Brad Zerfing drained a three with the shot clock running down to push the lead back to nine at 60-51 but the Cardinals would outscore York 11-2 over the last 3:14 of regulation to force the extra session. Dwyer sank two free throws with 40 seconds remaining to tie the game, sending the contest to the extra session. The Cardinals made five trips to the free throw line over the last 2:33 of the game while York, who was leading up until Dwyer’s two free throws, did not earn a trip to the charity stripe over the final 6:40 of regulation.

The overtime had three ties and four lead changes as the extra session was much like the first two stanzas. The Cardinals took the lead for good when Shane Sowden hit a lay up with 1:43 remaining in the overtime. Pat Satalin added an insurance free throw in the final four seconds as the Spartans would be unable to get the equalizer. York went 0-for-4 from the floor and 0-for-3 from three in the overtime. In both of their losses this year, the Spartans have lost by an identical 69-67 score.

Dwyer led the Cardinals as he finished with a game-high 27 points while he also had a team-high seven rebounds. Dwyer was 11-for-19 from the floor including 2-of-4 from three. Sean Stolzenthaler added 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists to the Cardinal attack while Satalin was the third Cardinal in double figures with 12 points. Satalin also had four assists and three rebounds.

Singer led the Spartans with 17 points and seven rebounds. Brandon Bushey added 11 points and four rebounds while Fass and Zerfing each contributed 10 points. Zerfing also grabbed seven rebounds, handed out four assists, blocked one shot and grabbed one steal. Fass nabbed six rebounds while he also had two steals.

The Spartans out-rebounded the Cardinals, who entered the game with the best rebound margin in the CAC, 46-32. York shot 44.8% from the floor but a cool 28.6% (4-for-14) from three. Catholic converted 41.7% of their attempts from the floor and 27.3% (6-for-22) from distance. The green and white shot 57.9% (11-for-19) from the free throw line while Catholic hit 65% (13-for-20) from the free throw line.

The loss to Catholic snaps the Spartans’ three-game win streak against the Cardinals. The loss is also the first this season in which the green and white led at the half. York was 13-0 when leading at the half heading into the game.

York returns to action in another key CAC contest on Saturday as they host Mary Washington. Tip time from Wolf Gym is set for 2:00 pm.
