Mass-Dartmouth 89, Mass-Boston 76

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA — The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team used a 13-7 run at the end of the first half to take the lead for good and went on to defeat UMass Boston, 89-76, in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at the Tripp Athletic Center Tuesday evening.

Junior guard Devon Maiorano broke a 29-all tie with five minutes remaining by hitting two free throws, then stealing the ball and feeding junior forward Stephane Abelard for a lay-up. The Beacons cut the lead to 37-36, but Maiorano hit a three-pointer and Abelard added a lay-up to finish the half with the Corsairs ahead, 42-36.

Charles Yuan of UMB hit a pair of jumpers early in the second half to make it 44-40. But Maiorano sandwiched a pair of treys around a three-point play by junior center Dan Holbrook to give UMD a 53-42 advantage. UMass Dartmouth stretched its lead out to 68-51, and the Beacons never got closer than nine points after that.

“I liked the way we finished the first half,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. “We wanted to use our advantage inside with Danny and Steph. When we got the ball inside, we forced them to drop off a perimeter guy, and that left the outside open for Devon, and he buried his threes. Paul Pawlowski did a great job on Tony Barros. He got 14 points, but he’s capable of putting up some big numbers, and Paul did an outstanding job on him.”

Abelard led UMD with 23 points, Maiorano added 21, Holbrook had 19 points and 14 rebounds, and Pawlowski contributed 10 points. Freshman guard Reece Freeman had 10 assists.

Amigo Paniagua led UMB with 22 points, Yuan added 17, Barros had 14 and James Hall contributed 10.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 9-6 and 3-3 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while UMass Boston dropped to 8-6 and 4-2 in LEC play with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Southern Maine Saturday.
