Carleton 68, St. Mary's (Minn.) 58

Winona, Minn. — Jake Phillips scored a career-high 26 points, 18 in the second half, and made six 3-pointers to lead Carleton to its sixth consecutive MIAC victory, a 68-58 triumph at St. Mary's.

The Knights (9-5, 6-3 MIAC) knocked down 10 triples and held the Cardinals to 35 percent shooting.

Terrance Smith paced the Cardinals (7-7, 5-4 MIAC) with 16 points. Brensley Haywood added 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals and Fiore Buccieri added 10 points off the bench for SMU.

Zach Johnson added 14 points, five rebounds and three assists and Dan Forkrud tallied 12 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks. He also knocked down his 100th career three-pointer as Carleton beat SMU for the 11th consecutive time.

The first half featured five ties and seven lead changes as SMU used a 2-3 zone to slow down the Carleton attack. A Haywood trilpe and Smith lay-up staked the Cardinals to their largest lead of the game, 17-14, with 6 minutes, 13 seconds left, but Phillips and Mike Kootsikas answered with three-pointers and the Knights settled for a 25-21 lead at the break.

The Knights opened the second half on a 10-4 spurt, pushing its lead to 10, fueled by six points from Phillips and four by Johnson. SMU whittled the deficit to five, but Carleton heated up from outside, drilling three straight 3-pointers, two by Phillips and one by Forkrud, to push the lead to 55-39 with 7:08 left. The Cardinals pulled with nine with less than two minutes left, but Carleton made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 57 seconds for the victory.

Carleton shot 48 percent from the field, including 52 percent in the second half when the Knights made 6-of-12 from 3-point range. The Cardinals struggled, as the Knights held them to 35 percent from the floor, including only 4-for-19 (21 percent) from three-point range.

The Knights, now in a three-way tie for second place in the MIAC standings with Gustavus and St. John's, rounds out the first half of their conference slate by hosting Bethel University on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m as part of a women's/men's doubleheader. Both games can be heard on Knights Online.
