Rose-Hulman 71, Centre 60

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Rose-Hulman too much for Centre men

Two days following a double-overtime win over DePauw University, the Centre College men's basketball team fell to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 71-60, Sunday, Jan. 15, in Terre Haute, Ind.

The loss drops the Colonels to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). Rose-Hulman improves to 7-8 overall and 3-2 in league action.

Leading 8-7 at the 15:54 mark in the first half, Centre was then outscored 11-4 over the next five minutes to fall behind 18-12 midway through the first half. The Colonels answered with an 11-4 run of their own to regain the lead 23-22 with 2:14 left in the half. The lead would be short-lived as the Engineers closed the half with a 7-2 run to take a 29-25 lead into halftime.

After a Rose-Hulman lay up to open the second half, Centre used a 10-2 run to take a 35-31 lead. Once again, the Engineers fought back to retake the lead. With the Colonels trailing 43-41 at the midpoint in the second period, Rose-Hulman outscored the Centre 12-4 to take a 10-point lead (55-45) with just under seven minutes to play.

With 2:23 left in the game, junior forward Matt Jacobson made a lay up to pull the Colonels within three points at 59-56. That would be as close as they would get as Rose-Hulman closed the game with a 12-4 run for the 11-point win.

The Engineers shot 56.8% (25-44) for the game, while Centre was held to 31.8% (14-44). Munchie Muskeyvalley paced Rose-Hulman with 19 points six assists and four rebounds. Brennan Dunville scored 13 points and Lorenzo Rice added 11 points for the Engineers.

Senior center Reggie Magnusson scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Colonels. Magnusson was only 3 of 10 from the field, but made 16 of his 18 free throw attempts. Sophomore guard Matt Nestheide added 10 points, five assists, four steals and two steals, while senior forward Coy Zerhusen grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the defeat.

Centre will return to action, Saturday, Jan. 21, when they host Sewanee-The University of the South. The SCAC game will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will tip-off at 3:00 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
