Guilford won for the third straight game and improves to 6-8 (5-3 ODAC). The Eagles fall to 5-10 (2-7 ODAC).
Bridgewater trimmed a 15-point second-half deficit to two with 59 seconds left. Clay Michael’s layup capped a 20-7 Bridgewater run and made it a 68-66 game before Strong answered at the other end with 25 seconds left.
Michael scored again 18 seconds later and Bridgewater quickly called time out, trailing 70-68. Michael fouled Guilford's Caleb Kimbrough on the in-bounds pass and following another Eagles’ timeout, the sophomore knocked down two free throws to ice the victory.
Michael led all scorers with 19 points, which included 16 in the second half. Josh Maupin tallied 16 points for the Eagles, thanks to four-of-six three-point shooting. Michael Oblitey added 10 points and three assists off the bench.
Thomas Burge was the only other Guilford student-athlete in double-figure scoring with 10 points. George Neville netted eight points off the bench and rookie Barry Wells totalled four points and a game- and career-high 11 rebounds. The Quakers enjoyed a 34-25 edge on the boards and withstood the Eagles’ 51.9 percent field-goal shooting.
Guilford hosts Emory & Henry Wednesday (1/18) in a rematch of the Nov. 30 contest that saw the Quakers pull out a 147-136 triumph in Emory, VA. The Eagles visit Washington and Lee Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
