Worcester State 72, Westfield State 67

WORCESTER, Ma — The Worcester State College men’s basketball team got a game-high 20 point performance from junior forward Mark Retallic (Oxford, MA) and defeated the visiting Owls of Westfield State College in an early MASCAC match up in Lancer Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Westfield State took a 2 point lead into the intermission after a three pointer by Worcester State’s Tyson Drayton (Roxbury, MA) with three seconds remaining in the first stanza put a stop to a quick 5-0 run that the Owls went on near the end of the half. Drayton led the Lancers in first half scoring tallying 7 points while Tony Collier (Colchester, VT) paced the visitors with 8 points including two treys.

The second half saw the Lancers take control of the game jumping out to a 12 point lead with 8:44 remaining in the contest. The Owls got that lead down to two points at, 60-58, after Collier hit a free throw capping off a four point play, but Worcester State was able to regroup and hold off Westfield State for the win.

The win gets Worcester State back over the .500 mark and they remain undefeated in MASCAC action. Westfield State drops to 9-6 and evens off at 1-1 in the MASCAC.

Along with Retallic, the Lancers got strong performances by Drayton who finished with 13 points and Winfred Rembert (New Haven, CT) who scored 9 points and grabbed 9 boards.
