Wilkes 89, Delaware Valley 42

Wilkes-Barre, PA — Wilkes University used a balanced attack that saw six players reach twin digits as they routed Delaware Valley College, 89-42, in a Freedom Conference men’s basketball game on Saturday afternoon in the Marts Center. The win improves the Colonels to 8-4 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while the Aggies slide to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

Wilkes senior center Evan Walters reached a career milestone in the victory. Walters blocked four shots to become the all-time leader in blocked shots at Wilkes. He ended the day with 187 blocks, one better than the 186 blocks registered by John Zapko from 1975-79.

The Colonels used a 13-2 run midway through the opening half to take command. Wilkes led 15-14 before Jeremy Kable scored eight straight points, including a pair of three-pointers, to extend the lead to 23-14 at the 10:18 mark. After a basket by the Aggies Dominique Brown cut the gap to 23-16, Chris Shovlin knocked down a three-pointer to make it 26-16. Shovlin would cap the run with a jumper in the lane that gave Wilkes a 28-16 edge with 8:04 showing on the clock.

Wilkes maintained their double-figure lead and held a 40-26 advantage at intermission. They would dispel any notions of a Delaware Valley comeback by out-scoring the Aggies 11-2 in the opening 4:21 of the second half. A pair of Walters field goals and a jumper by Matt Gould gave the Colonels a 46-26 lead just 1:43 into the period.

Isaiah Pinckney would put a temporary end to the run for Delaware Valley with a 15-foot jumper that cut the lead to 46-28. However, Gould hit one free throw, Walters scored inside and Shovlin converted a fast break basket to push the lead to 51-28.

Wilkes would continue to add to their lead throughout the remainder of the second half. The Colonels, who placed all 12 players that dressed for the game in the scoring column, shot an impressive 69.2 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. Wilkes also held Delaware Valley to only 16 points in the final half and limited the Aggies to just 24.1 percent shooting from the field.

Kable had 14 points to lead Wilkes in scoring. Shovlin added 13 points and six assists. Walters had 12 points, five rebounds and the four blocked shots. Michael Constantine and David Goode contributed 11 points each for the Colonels, while Steve Kline finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Brown was the only Delaware Valley player to reach twin digits. He finished with 14 points.
