MEN’S BASKETBALL …Warhawks’ Nine Game Win Streak Halted at Stout
UW-Whitewater, ranked 23rd in this week’s poll of Division III teams, had its nine game win streak snapped with a 78-73 loss to UW-Stout at Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie, Wisconsin Saturday evening. The win also ended a three game losing streak for UW-S, which came in to the game ranked 18th.
Whitewater’s last lead of the game came at 16:07 in the first half when Rob Perry hit a pair of free throws. Stout led by as many as twelve in the first half, but the margin was 40-29 at intermission. The Blue Devils opened the second half with an 11-2 run to increase their margin to 51-31. The largest lead was 61-40 at 8:06, when Whitewater began coming back. From that point on UW-W almost doubled the Blue Devils’ scoring, holding a 33-17 advantage that cut the final margin to five. The Warhawks hit five three’s in the final eight minutes, including four by senior guard Melvin Williams, who was scoreless until that point.
UW-Stout was led by sophomore guard Adam Chandler with 22 points, who also added a game-high eight assists. Junior center Jacob Nonemacher added 17 points and five blocked shots. Terry Farmer had a game high nine rebounds, while also contributing 11 points for UW-S. Williams and junior center Andy Freund had 12 points apiece for Whitewater, with senior guard Jeremy Manchester chipped in with 10 points and a game high five steals.
Stout shot 51% from the floor, UW-W 35%. After attempting just two free throws in the first half, UW-S went 14-24 from the line in the second half.
UW-Whitewater is now 11-3 overall, 6-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Warhawks are in a first place tie with UW-Stevens Point, also 6-1, which did not play today. UW-Stout is 12-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
UW-Whitewater will host UW-Oshkosh Wednesday, January 18 at 7:00 in the Kachel Gym of Williams Center. The Oshkosh contest begins a five-game home stand for the Warhawks.
