St. Thomas 98, St. Mary's (Minn.) 62

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Junior guard Bryan Schnettler had his second consecutive 30-point scoring outing to power the first-place Tommies (11-3 overall, 8-1 MIAC) to a 98-62 home win over second-place St. Mary's (7-6, 5-3) in Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game at UST's Schoenecker Arena.

Schnettler -- who scored a career-high 31 points three days earlier vs. Bethel -- sank 11-of-14 shots (6-of-9 from 3-point range) to lead Saturday's victory.

Junior center Isaac Rosefelt also made 11-of-14 shots and closed with 25 points and 11 rebounds, including seven dunks. It was Rosefelt's 10th double-double in 14 games this season.

Schnettler scored 19 points during a pivotal 27-9 mid-game run that turned a two-point lead into a 21-point cushion.

St. Thomas had only seven turnovers, made nine 3-pointers and shot 62% from the field (36-of-58).

The Cardinals, who never led, got 14 points from junior forward Michael Batterman, 13 points from junior Terrence Smith and nine points and six rebounds from Michael Rohr.

For UST, junior Mike Keating added 10 points and three assists, senior Joey Shimek scored nine points, and senior Sean Sweeney had six points and six assists.

The Tommies' 8-1 MIAC record gives them a 2 1-2 game lead near the halfway point of the 20-game conference standings. St. Mary's, Carleton, Gustavus and St. John's are in a four-way tie for second place at 5-3.

The 98 points, including a game-closing 22-4 run in the final 7:11 fueled mostly by reserves, were the most scored by UST in six seasons.

St. Thomas shot 63% from the field in the first-half en route to a 43-32 halftime lead.

Rosefelt had three dunks in the game's first 1:35 for a quick 6-0 Tommie lead. The Cards tied the game at 19-19, and later pulled within 34-32 with 3:32 to go in the first half on Mike Sweeney's jumper.

Schnettler scored seven consecutive points and the Toms closed the half on a 9-0 run to lead by 11. He sank four more 3-pointers in the first 6:07 of the second half to build a 61-40 lead.

The Cards never got closer than 17 points thereafter.

Schnettler made 14-of-23 3-pointers in two MIAC games this week. In 28 career MIAC games he has made 95-of-192 (49.8%) from 3-point range.

Since losing 62-59 at home to Augsburg Jan. 2, the Tommies have swept St. John's, Bethel and St. Mary's on their home floor by a combined 116 points (38.6 ppg.).

The Tommies have two road tests this week around a Wednesday bye. They play Monday night at Concordia-Moorhead and next Saturday at Carleton.
