Salve Regina 51, Endicott 49

NEWPORT, R.I. — Salve Regina University first-year guard Allegra Lovoy [FR/Charlestown, R.I.] swished a 14-foot game-winning jumper as time expired to lift the host Seahawks over Endicott College, 51-49, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action today.

The Gulls had enjoyed an early six-point lead (14-8), but the Seahawks went on a 12-0 run highlighted by two driving layups from co-captain Margaret O'Brien [JR/Canton, Mass.]. When Lovoy missed a 14-foot jumper to end the first half, Salve Regina enjoyed a six-point lead (25-19).

O'Brien and fellow co-captain Lindsay Frederick [SR/Danvers, Mass.] jump started the second half with respective layups. When Lovoy completed an old-fashioned three-point play with 13:13 to play, the Seahawks enjoyed their largest lead of the game (37-23).

The Gulls got a spark from their bench as Hayley Janelle [FR/Madbury, N.H.], Kate Harte [JR/Warner, N.H.], and Nicole Young [FR/Rockland, Mass.] combined for 10 points during a 14-3 run to pull within three (40-37). Endicott made 19-of-20 free throws.

Salve Regina point guard Katie Horan [SO/Webster, Mass.] stuck her team's only three-pointer of the game with 5:13 remaining and Megan Barry [JR/Plainville, Mass.] followed with a pair of free throws to rebuild an eight-point lead for the Seahawks (47-39). The next eight points for Endicott came from the charity stripe before Liz Yuneman [SR/Middle Village, N.Y.] sank a jumper to tie the score at 49-all with 46 seconds left.

Endicott iced O'Brien at the Seahawk foul line and had a chance at a go-ahead bucket, but the missed field goal attempt gave O'Brien a defensive rebound with 18 seconds left as Salve Regina made its final offensive push without stopping the clock.

Frederick finished with a double-double and game highs in points (14) and rebounds (15); O'Brien finished with 10 points and three steals. Yuneman led the visitors with 11 points.

Salve Regina (7-5; 4-2 CCC) next plays at Regis (Mass.) on Tuesday, January 17 while Endicott (5-6; 2-1 CCC) plays at University of New England that same evening.
