Mount Ida 85, Maine-Farmington 76

NEWTON, Mass. — The Mount Ida men’s basketball team earned its first North Atlantic Conference victory of the season this afternoon, defeating the University of Maine Farmington 85-76 at the Mount Ida Athletic Center. Senior Scott Chamberlain (Millis, Mass./Millis) led the way for the Mustangs, totaling a season-high 21 points to go with four assists, four rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

Maine Farmington led 33-27 following a three-pointer by sophomore Matt St. John (Wayne, Maine/Maranacook) with 2:33 remaining in the first half, but a layup by junior Doug Williams (Ellicot City, Md./St. Mary’s) capped off a 10-2 Mustangs run to give the hosts a 37-35 advantage at the break. Williams sparked Mount Ida with ten first half points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the floor.

The Beavers led by as many as six points in the second half and maintained a four-point edge (63-59) with 8:37 remaining in regulation. From there it was all Mustangs, as Mount Ida outscored the visitors 26-13 down the stretch to hand the Beavers their first Conference loss of the season.

Williams finished with 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor off the bench for Mount Ida. The Mustangs also received solid production from classmate Andreas Vasiliu (Newton, Mass./Newton North), who totaled 15 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Mike Dunham (Salem, N.H./Salem) added nine points and a game-high seven assists, while freshman Otis Thompson (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) rounded things out with an 11-point, nine-rebound performance for the hosts.
