Hamilton 83, Vassar 62

CLINTON, N.Y. — Tim Welchons '06 and Harlee Wood '09 scored 13 points apiece to lead Hamilton College to an 83-62 Liberty League win against visiting Vassar College at Scott Field House on Jan. 14.

Welchons handed out five assists and Wood was credited with four of Hamilton's 19 steals. The Continentals (2-0 league, 10-1 overall) helped force 30 Vassar turnovers with those steals. Phil Valenti '06 chipped in ten points, a team-high seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Staunton Peck '06 tossed in ten points. Hamilton's bench was responsible for 30 points and 16 rebounds.

Tyson Brazell '08, Lawrence Avitabile '08 and Rob Dauster '07 scored 11 points each to lead the Brewers (0-2, 7-4). Avitabile grabbed all of his team-high seven rebounds in the first half. He left the game late in the first half with an injury and did not return. Dauster went 3-for-5 from three-point range in a reserve role. Lenny Holt '09 was credited with five assists. Vassar has lost three straight games after starting the season 7-1.

The Brewers led 2-0 after their first possession before the Continentals scored nine straight points to take the lead for good. Hamilton led by as many as 15 in the first half and took a 36-29 advantage into the break. The Continentals started the second half on a 11-1 run for a 47-30 lead with 16:27 remaining. Hamilton opened up a 29-point advantage on one occasion and cruised the rest of the way.

The Continentals shot just 38.4 percent (28-73) from the field, but attempted 22 more field goals than Vassar. Hamilton held a 43-39 advantage in rebounds as the Continentals pulled down 17 on the offensive glass. The Brewers finished with six offensive rebounds and shot 43.1 percent (22-51) from the floor.
