Maryville (Mo.) 73, Fontbonne 61

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Maryville University head men's basketball coach Matt Rogers and his squad tallied their third consecutive win and remained in a tie for first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) with a 73-61 victory over rival Fontbonne University. The Saints improve to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win, while Fontbonne drops to 4-10 on the season and 0-3 in the SLIAC.

A strong first half effort, which included a 51.6 percent shooting performance from the field, aided Maryville's win. The Saints shot 16-of-31 from the field, including 4-of-9 (.444) from behind the arc and 8-of-11 (.727) from the charity stripe, to take a 44-38 lead into halftime.

Maryville's second half performance allowed the Griffins to remain in the game, as the Saints only outscored Fontbonne 29-23. Rogers' squad hit only 26.7 percent of their shots in the final 20 minutes, but their 12-of-17 (.706) shooting from the free-throw line helped them keep their advantage until the final buzzer sounded.

Senior Matt Regan led Maryville with 22 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists. He shot 5-of-10 (.500) from the field and 12-of-14 (.857) from the charity stripe. Also scoring in double figures were senior Ben Hebl and freshman Aaron Steinke with 16 and 10 points respectively.

Steinke would add a team-high seven rebounds, while senior Stephen Bash and sophomore Matt McCarthy grabbed five boards a piece. Senior Tim Elwell dished out three assists, grabbed four rebounds and recorded two steals in the win.

Fontbonne had only two players score in double figures. Patrick McCoy tallied 14 points, and Justin Storandt recorded 11 points and six rebounds. The Griffins Brian Fogerty also added to the effort with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Rogers and his squad will look to remain undefeated in conference play when they return to their home court on Wednesday, January 18. The Saints will host the Blue Jays of Westminster College (Mo.), who currently stand in a tie for second place in the SLIAC. Game time is 8:00 pm.
