ETBU sees its four-game winning streak come to an end with the loss, and the Tigers fall to 7-7 overall and 7-4 in conference action. The 22nd-ranked Choctaws improve to 12-1 overall and 9-1 in the conference and have grabbed early control of the ASC East Division race.
MC’s win Saturday was the first time the Choctaws have defeated ETBU in Ornelas Gym since the 2001-02 season, a streak of three straight games.
But it wasn’t easy. The Tigers battled to a 41-37 lead in a tight affair in the first half, but the hot-shooting Choctaws turned it up in the second half, making 19 of 30 shots from the floor and holding off ETBU’s attempted comeback. The Tigers’ cause wasn’t helped by the fact ETBU hit only 10 of 21 from the free-throw line, while MC was making more free throws – 23 – than the Tigers had trips to the line. Overall the Choctaws were 23 of 31 from the charity stripe.
ETBU’s Chris Isom led all scorers with 27 points and 14 rebounds while playing 38 minutes. Twin brother Cedric Isom, hounded all game by the Choctaws defensively, was held to 13 points on 4 of 15 shooting with 8 rebounds and 7 assists while playing every minute of the contest.
Melvin Allen scored 16, and Cory Cooper added 11 off the bench for the Tigers.
The Choctaws were led by Timothy Broomfield, who finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Tyler Winford, who added 15 points and 5 boards.
MC’s Lonnie Vasquez was particularly effective as well, connecting on 4 of 6 3-point attemps to finish with 16 points.
