Carnegie Mellon 94, Christopher Newport 81

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Christopher Newport's men's basketball team fell behind early and but could not crawl back into it as the Tartans of No. 16 Carnegie Mellon defeated CNU 94-81 Saturday afternoon in the final non-conference game for the Captains.

The Captains could not get a bucket to fall throughout the entire games as almost everything Carnegie Mellon threw up, dropped for the Tartan. 19 missed free throws didn't help the Captains cause either.

CMU led at halftime, 49-38. The Captains had a chance to cut the lead to single digits as Davon Barton went to the line with less than five seconds remaining in the half for a one-and-one. He missed the front end, got his own rebound and his put back rimmed as time expired.

Carnegie Mellon led by as many as 19 in the first half, 45-26, with 3:16 left on a three-pointer by Nate Maurer.

The Tartans finished the half 19-of-41 (46%) from the field, 7-of-15 (47%) on threes and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. CNU was 14-of-35 (40%) from the floor, 3-of-6 from behind the arc and 7-of-11 (64%) from the charity stripe.

The two teams played about even in the second half, with CMU edging out the Captains, 45-43. Carnegie Mellon led by as many as 27 in the second half, 88-61, with 5:37 left in the game on a bucket by Marques Johnson.

For the half, CMU was 16-of-34 (47%) from the floor, 2-of-7 (29%) on threes and 11-of-15 (73%) from the stripe. The Captains were 11-of-24 (46%) from the floor, 2-of-7 from behind the arc and 19-of-34 (56%) from the free throw line.

For the game, Carnegie Mellon was 15-of-75 (47%) from the floor, 9-of-22 (41%) from behind the arc and 15-of-21 (71%) from the free throw line. Christopher Newport was 25-of-59 (42%) from the field, 5-of-13 (39%) on threes and 26-of-45 (58%) from the free throw line.

The Tartans were led by Maurer's 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Johnson finished with 20 points, Clayton Barlow-Wilcox finished with 20 points and 12 boards off the bench, A.J. Straub added 13 points.

CNU was led by Edward Riley's 19 points off the bench. Davon Barton added 14 points and eight assists, Korey Lewis added 13 points, Mark Blasingame had 11 points, nine rebounds and four blocks, Donta Selden contributed 10 points and six helpers.

Carnegie Mellon set a new Freeman Center record for most points by an opponent, eclipsing the old record of 86 set by William Paterson on March 10, 2001 and Southern Virginia on Jan. 9, 2003.

CMU is now 13-1 overall. The Captains fall to 10-4 and saw their four-game winning streak snapped. CNU returns to action Tuesday as they travel to NC Wesleyan with tip-off set for 7:30 pm.
