Augustana 73, Carthage 70

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (4-10, 0-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to No. 10 Augustana College (Ill., 14-1, 4-0 CCIW), 73-70, on Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. Augustana (Ill.) jumped out to an 11-1 lead in the opening minutes and led by eight points at halftime, 35-27. The Vikings went up by 10, 37-27, as the second half got underway. The Red Men whittled the lead down to tie the contest, 49-49, at 10:56 and took their first lead of the game, 55-54, at 6:47. Carthage still had a one-point lead, 68-67, at 1:16 before a layup by Jay McAdams-Thornton with 49 seconds remaining put Augustana (Ill.) up to stay, 69-68. The Vikings’ Rick Harrigan made four free throws in the final 37 seconds, sandwiched around at layup by Malik Imani at the seven-second mark. Augustana (Ill.) shot 49 percent (26-53), while the Red Men shot 44 percent (27-62). Harrigan led the Vikings with 19 points. McAdams-Thornton had 13 points and seven rebounds, while Nate Swetalla chipped in 11 points. Carthage’s Kyle Jeffery scored a career-high 29 points on 10-of-19 field goals, including three-of-seven three-pointers and six-of-six free throws. Imani had 12 points and six rebounds, while Navarro Thompson added 10 points, five boards and eight assists. Carthage plays host to No. 12 North Central College (12-1, 2-1 CCIW) on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the Carthage Physical Education Center (7:30 p.m.).
