Presentation 60, Northwestern (Minn.) 56

ST. PAUL, Minn. — On a night in which they produced their worst shooting performance of the season, the Northwestern College (Minn.) men’s basketball team was unable to recover, falling to Presentation College (S.D.) 60-56 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action. Making just 22-of-59 (37.3%) field goal attempts, the Eagles saw their four-game winning streak come to an abrupt end, slipping to 11-3 on the year and 2-1 in UMAC action. Presentation improved to 4-8 overall for the season with the victory and increased their league showing to 2-1 this winter. It was also Northwestern’s first home loss of the season and Presentation first road victory this season.

Tied at 12-to-12 with 14:43 remaining in the first half, Northwestern slowly created a 6-point advantage, taking a 24-18 lead with just over 3 minutes left in the frame. The Eagles increased their lead to 8 points before the midway point, only to have it cut to 5 in the winding seconds of the half on a Saints three-point basket. The halftime scoreboard read 26-21 in favor of Northwestern.

Presentation began the second half posting a 12-6 run in the first 5 minutes as the Saints took over the lead in a 33-32 score. Keeping the momentum, Presentation strung together another run, this time a 14-7 swing as the Saints were in control 47-39 with just over 8 minutes remaining in the battle. Northwestern trailed by as many as 9 points before a furious comeback attempt in the final 2 minutes fell short. Trailing 55-46 with 2:19 left, Dave Zuleger (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West HS) and Mike Anderstrom (Mendota Heights, Minn./New Life Academy) combined to hit 3 straight three-point field goals as the Eagles were down by just 2 points at 57-55. After two successful Saints’ free throws, Northwestern was only able to muster a free throw in their final 3 possessions as Presentation hung on for the 60-56 triumph.

The Eagles connected on just 8-of-20 (40.0%) from three-point range and were out-rebounded by Presentation in a 42-31 margin. The Saints hit 20-of-49 (40.8%) from the floor and 11-of-25 (44.0%) from behind the arc.

Junior point-guard Caleb Baker (Princeton, Ill.) and sophomore forward Mike Anderstrom were the only Northwestern players to reach double-digits for points. Baker owned 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Anderstrom added 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Daniel Hanson (Plymouth, Minn.) contributed 8 points and 11 rebounds as well in a near double-double outing.

For Presentation College, all-conference standout Marcus Robinson (Houston, Texas) looked impressive as usual, dropping in a game-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting, also tallying 7 rebounds. Trevor Krawchuk (Fernie, British Columbia) notched 11 points and 12 rebounds to aid in the Saints’ offensive efforts.

Northwestern College is now 7-3 all-time against Presentation College and 4-3 all-time at home against the Saints. Presentation has defeated the Eagles two-straight times on Northwestern’s home court. The Eagles will rest quickly and gear-up to face the University of Minnesota-Morris at home on Saturday, January 14th, at 5 p.m. Presentation College will pack their bags and match-up with Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota, on Saturday, January 14th, also at 5 p.m.
