Worcester State 51, Eastern Nazarene 49

WORCESTER, Ma — The Worcester State College men’s basketball team overcame a poor shooting performance and snuck by the tenacious Crusaders of Eastern Nazarene College in Lancer Gymnasium Thursday evening handing the visitors a, 51-49, defeat.  The win evens the Lancers record at 6-6 while Eastern Nazarene falls to 1-11. The Lancers shot 24% form the field in the first half (33% overall) while the Crusaders shot 36.8% and grabbed a 9 point lead at the half, 27-18.   Luc Jasmin (Pawtucket, RI) paced the Crusaders in the first half scoring 10 points.  Senior Ryan Hopkins (Oxford, MA) kept the Lancers close tallying 9 first half points.

Eastern Nazarene extended their lead to as much as 12 in the opening minutes of the second half before Worcester State began to whittle the lead down eventually catching the Crusaders with 6:24 remaining at, 42-42.  The teams traded the lead over the final minutes before Worcester State grabbed the advantage for good on a lay-up by sophomore Will Spont (Bellingham, MA) with 1:22 remaining.  Eastern Nazarene’s Ricardo Jean-Noel (Montreal, QC) hit a free throw to bring the Crusaders to within 1 but Tyler Hopkins (Oxford, MA) iced the game with a free throw to give the Lancers the win.

Three Lancers finished in double figures scoring with Ryan Hopkins finishing with a team-high 11 points.  Senior Tyson Drayton (Roxbury, MA) and Spont each added 10 points.  Jean-Noel led all scorers with 15 points while Jasmin chipped in with 14 in the loss for Eastern Nazarene.   

Worcester State will return to MASCAC action on Saturday when they host Westfield State.  Eastern Nazarene will visit Wentworth on Saturday as well.
