York (Pa.) 79, Marymount 54

YORK, Pa. — The York College men’s basketball team used a big second half and a solid defense to post a 79-54 Capital Athletic Conference win over Marymount University on Wednesday night in Wolf Gym. The Spartans, who are ranked ninth in the nation, improve to 12-1 overall and 2-1 in the CAC while the Saints fall to 6-7 overall and 0-3 in the CAC. The win extends York’s home court winning streak to 25 games.

The first half was not a a work of art on either side. The Spartans jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on a Chad McGowan jumper and a three. Marymount climbed into the contest and held a 19-15 lead with 10:24 remaining in the half. York retook the lead on a Nate Fry lay up with 7:03 left but the Saints seized their last lead of the game on a pair of Bryant Majors’ free throws with 5:12 remaining in the stanza. York recaptured the advantage for good on a Brian Singer fast break lay up with just over four minutes remaining in the half. The Spartans tacked on two more fast break lay ups in the half to take a 30-25 lead to the break.

York came out of the intermission hot as McGowan hit a lay up, Kenny Fass drained a three and Singer hit another lay up in the first 1:34 of the half, pushing the Spartan lead to 12 at 37-25. After a pair of free throws by Mark Mazzuchi put the Spartan lead to 10, York fashioned an 18-1 run to take a 55-27 lead with 11:51 remaining in the game. Overall, going back to the Saints’ last points of the first half, the Spartans outscored the Marymount 31-3 over a 13:21 stretch.

The Spartan lead grew to as many as 31 before York settled for the 25 point victory.

York was paced by McGowan as the sophomore tallied 15 points and pulled down a game-high eight boards. McGowan was very efficient as he was 4-for-7 from the floor, 1-for-2 from three, and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. He also had two blocked shots in just 21 minutes. Senior Brandon Bushey added 13 points and two rebounds while Paddy Lee played another one of his all-around contests with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots, and two steals. Fass was the fourth Spartan in double figures with 10 points and four rebounds.

Mike Gray led the Saints with 13 points and three rebounds. Corey Diamond added 11 points and five rebounds while he also had two steals. Pooyan Rahimi was the third Saint in double figures with 10 points.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 46.8% from the floor including a solid 42.3% from three. York also converted 83.3% (10-12) from the free throw line. Marymount finished the game shooting 37.5% from the floor and 35.7% from downtown. The Saints were a chilly 7-for-14 (50%) from the free throw line.

York out rebounded Marymount 41-32 while the unselfish Spartans recorded 22 assists on 29 field goals for the game. The Spartans also got 33 points off Marymount’s 18 turnovers.

The Spartans conclude their season-high seven game home stand on Saturday when they host St. Mary’s in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time at Wolf Gym is set for 2:00 pm.
