Schnettler's eight threes were two off the UST single-game record of 10 set by current Macalester coach Curt Kietzer 19 seasons ago.
UST remained 1 1-2 games ahead of second-place St. Mary's and 2 1-2 games ahead of five other teams in the MIAC standings near the halfway point of the 20-game race.
St. Thomas closed the first half with a 15-2 run to lead 38-22 at halftime. Bethel cut the gap to nine with a quick 7-0 run, but the Toms answered with a 27-8 run to blow open the game.
Junior center Isaac Rosefelt had 11 points and 14 rebounds and senior forward Joey Shimek had 11 points and six rebounds for UST. The Tommies shot 58% from the field (33-of-57) to BU's 32% (19-of-60), and outrebounded Bethel 43-27.
Charles Meadowcroft had 12 points for the Royals.
St. Thomas is home Saturday to play second-place St. Mary's (3:15 p.m.).
