Baldwin-Wallace 92, John Carroll 69

UNIVERSITY HTS., Oh — A horrid shooting half by John Carroll proved too big a hurdle to overcome, but lights out shooting by visiting Baldwin Wallace was just as lethal in a rare-for-the-series 92-69 Yellow Jackets rout this evening at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.

Tonight’s final result was in stark contrast to the recent history of this crosstown rivalry, as 12 of the previous 16 games were decided by nine points or less. The 23-point final margin was the largest in the series since a 78-53 Baldwin-Wallace victory over John Carroll on January 27, 1986.

Baldwin-Wallace opened the game by steadily building a 24-9 lead during the first 13 minutes of the contest. The host Blue Streaks would trail by as many as 20 points in the first half before cutting the margin to 16 points by the end of the period.

The first half was a struggle in futility for JCU, as the hosts were 7-35 (.200) from the field

In the initial minutes of the second half, JCU came out strong and went on a 9-0 scoring run, reducing the Yellow Jackets’ lead to 44-35. Baldwin-Wallace by scoring 16 of the next 20 points and surged to a 60-39 lead, capped off with a pair of free throws by junior Tori Davis with 13:11 remaining in the second half. John Carroll never got closer than 16 the rest of the way.

Davis led Baldwin-Wallace 12-2, 6-1 OAC) with 20 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks, while senior guard Keith Aufmuth added 18 points. Baldwin-Wallace was 35-55 .636) from the field for the game, including a blistering 21-28 (.750) in the final 20 minutes.

Guard Pete Moran was the high scorer for John Carroll (9-5, 5-2 OAC) with a game-high 21 points. Demetrius Travis posted the game’s lone double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. JCU shot 20-40 (.500) in the second half, but could never fully recover from the terrible start and finished the night 27-75 (.360).

Not only was it Baldwin-Wallace’s third consecutive win over JCU, but also its third consecutive win on John Carroll’s home floor, where JCU is 40-6 in its last 46 games.
