Randolph-Macon took advantage of an off shooting night by the Tigers, who made just six shots from the floor and missed all eight three-pointers they attempted in the first half, to open up a 23-14 advantage midway through the first half. Hampden-Sydney cut the lead to seven points, 23-16, on Troy Kaase’s (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) first bucket of the game, but the Yellow Jackets finished the half on an 11-4 run, thanks to eight points from Wansley, to lead, 34-20, at halftime.
Hampden-Sydney trimmed the lead to 12 points (41-29) on Tyler Murray’s (Atlanta, GA/Harrison) jumper with 16:14 to play, but could draw no closer as Randolph-Macon eventually pushed the advantage to 21 (55-34) on Nick Annacone’s trifecta. Consecutive three pointers by Mike Edwards (Richmond, VA/Steward School) over the final two minutes resulted in the final advantage being just 15 for the Yellow Jackets, who scored their fourth straight win over the Tigers.
Wansley led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points, while Hawley chipped in 13 and a game-high seven boards. Randolph-Macon hit on 26-of-58 (44.8%) from the floor, canned 8-of-18 (44.4%) from beyond the arc and made one of just three free throws, while out-rebounding Hampden-Sydney, 43-29.
Tyler Murray led the Tigers as he tied his career high with 18 points in 22 minutes of action. The ODAC’s leading scorer entering the game, Troy Kaase scored a season-low eight points, while the Tigers second-leading scorer Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan) was shut out, but did manage a game and team-high six assists. Hampden-Sydney shot 40 percent (11-for-27) from the floor in the second half to pull its game average to 30.4 percent (17-for-56), while the Tigers made just 4-of-17 (24%) from beyond the arc and hit on 8-of-9 (89%) from the free throw line.
