The Cougars (10-4, 1-0 USA South) outrebounded the Panthers 51-36 and held Ferrum (4-10, 0-1 USA South) to only 25 percent shooting from the floor.
Averett led by as many as 16 early in the contest at 23-7, but had their lead sliced into late in the half, when FC went on an 11-0 run to close to within 23-18. However, the Cougars held on and regained a 12-point halftime advantage. The Panthers were unable to get within single digits in the second half, as Averett went on for their fourth consecutive win over the Panthers.
Rafael DeLeon led the way for Averett with 14 points and 13 rebounds for his third double-double of the season, his second consecutive one. Shaun Hagwood tallied 10 points, while Sterling Williams added nine. Dominique Stevenson dished out five assists for the Cougars in the win.
Ferrum was led by an 11-point effort from Trey Ray, who also led the team with eight rebounds. Rob Fuller added 10 points.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. in a home conference game against Greensboro College in the Grant Center.
