Delaware Valley 59, Drew 58

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. — A lane violation on Drew University wiped out a free throw that would have tied the game with 0.3 seconds remaining and Delaware Valley College squeaked out a 59-58 home victory in a Freedom Conference game.

The Rangers (6-8, 1-2 Freedom) inbounded the ball just inside the halfcourt line with 7.7 seconds remaining. They got an open look for a shot, but Abdul Jalloh missed the 3-point attempt. The long rebound was grabbed in the air and shot back up by Mike Amalfie, who was fouled in the process. The sophomore missed his first free throw and his second took a crazy bounce off the rim and fell in. However, the officials blew the whistle as the ball was in midair and called the lane violation on Drew. Delaware Valley (4-9, 1-2) threw a long pass that was touched inbounds to run the remaining ticks off the clock.

A back-and-forth second half saw Drew hold a 51-47 lead after David Cramer hit a trey with 7:20 remaining. The Aggies answered with nine straight points, including the final four by Pat Lenahan, for a 56-51 advantage with 4:35 to go.

Sam Taub hit back-to-back layups for the Rangers to pull to within one, 56-55, with 3:46 left on the clock. The teams then traded 3-pointers as Zack Van Dyke hit for Delaware Valley with 3:12 remaining, and Bob Carella connected for Drew with 2:37 left for the final points of the game.

Both teams had chances in the final moments as Carella missed an off-balanced jumper with 10.6 seconds remaining and Delaware Valley’s Maurice Slaughter was fouled on the rebound. However, he missed the front end of a one-in-one, giving Drew its last chance that resulted in the wild ending.

Freshman Jason Seipt (North Penn) poured in a career-high 14 points while also adding five rebounds and four assists for Delaware Valley. Van Dyke and Ryan Walsh added 11 points apiece while Lenahan finished with eight.

Taub led Drew with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Carella hit double digits with 15 points.
