Calvin 82, Adrian 68

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — In a fast-paced conference game tonight, the Knights collected their fourth straight victory to become tied for first place in the MIAA with Albion, defeating Adrian College 82-68. Calvin and Albion are both 3-0 in league play with Hope a game behind at 2-1.

Calvin shone offensively in the first half, connecting on three three-pointers and shooting 50 percent for field goals. Calvin held a twelve point lead as early as the 14:30 mark, outscoring Adrian 17-5. A 10-2 Adrian run, however, cut the Knights lead down to four, 19-15. Freshman Tyler Zoerhof soon sparked a Calvin 10-0 run and the crowd’s enthusiasm with a one-handed baseline dunk. The run included three three-point shots from the hands of senior Kyle Trewhella and put the Knights ahead 21 points, 40-19. Calvin finished the half strong, leading 48-28 at the half.

Though Adrian outscored Calvin 40-34 in the second half, the Bulldogs did not get within 11 points of the Knights. Freshman Caleb Veldhouse was 6-for-6 at the line in the last 1:30 of the game. Calvin closed out the game with a fourteen point lead, 82-68.

Veldhouse was the leading scorer for the Knights, earning 22 points including 11-12 in free throws. Trewhella racked up 18 points and senior Andy Draayer followed with 13 points. Zoerhof and junior Josh Meckes each contributed eight points.

David Cultra and Jeff Nokovich led Adrian with 13 points apiece, while Andy Kubish had 11 points.

Calvin will now prepare for its 158th meeting with Hope as the Knights will travel to Holland to face the Flying Dutchmen at the DeVos Fieldhouse at 3:00 p.m. Calvin leads the all-time series 80-77. Over the course of the prior 157 meetings, Calvin has outscored Hope by by just 11 points (10,450-10,349) which works out to a difference of just 0.07 points per game.
