The win was the Bison’s sixth in a row and improved their record to 11-4 overall and 2-0 in the PAC. The Yellow Jackets saw their record evened at 6-6 and fell to 0-2 in conference play.
Bethany used a barrage of three-pointers in the opening half to claim a 60-43 lead by halftime. Sophomore guard Brody Jackson drained four triples and senior guard Scott Mezyk swished three as BC hit 10 of 18 shots from the arc in the opening stanza. Back-to-back treys from Jackson gave Bethany their biggest lead of the half at 53-26 with five minutes to go before intermission before the Yellow Jackets closed with a 17-7 run to get within 17 at the break.
Any hopes Waynesburg had for a comeback were crushed quickly, as the Bison opened the second half with a 12-0 run. Junior Chris Stephens scored six during the spurt that basically sealed the BC triumph, their sixth straight over Waynesburg. The Yellow Jackets did close the game with a 13-2 run over the final three minutes to make the final score a little closer.
Pacing the Green and White offense, which hit 39 of 66 shots for the game, were the Bison Twin Towers. Matt went 10 of 16 from the floor and added five rebounds and four assists to his 21 points. Mike was nearly perfect on the night, as he was 7-for-8 from the floor, including 1-for-1 from the arc, and 6-for-6 from the foul line in totaling his 21 markers. In addition, he gave out five assists in the contest.
Also reaching double figures for BC, which broke the century mark for the second straight game and fourth time this season, was Mezyk, who had 13 points and a game-high six assists, and Jackson, who amassed four rebounds and four helpers to go along with his 12 points.
Waynesburg, who shot 53 percent (32-61) from the floor and 50 percent (9-18) from three-point land in the setback, was led by Ryan Bujnowski and Jeff Linden with 17 points each.
Bethany returns to the hardwood Saturday when it hosts Washington & Jefferson College in an early season showdown for first place in the conference. Both teams will enter the game 2-0 in the PAC. The second game of the doubleheader with the women’s team is set for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
