Wooster 102, Allegheny 71

MEADVILLE, Pa. — After holding their own for the first 20 minutes of the game, the Allegheny College Gators (5-8, 1-4 NCAC) fell to the strength of the third ranked (d3hoops.com) Wooster Scots (13-1, 5-0 NCAC) on Wednesday evening by a 102-71 score.

Freshman" class="red" rel=nofollow>http://www.allegheny.edu/athletics/menbb/0506/images/hollihan3.jpg">Freshman forward Ryan Hollihan (Saxonburg/Knoch) scored a career-high 21 points in the game, hitting eight of nine shots in the game, with Casey McCloskey (Erie/Cathedral Prep) adding 18 in the losing effort.

The game was back and forth for the entire first half, with the Gators holding an eight-point, 22-14 lead with 12:12 to play in the period. Wooster responded with a 20-6 run, taking a six-point lead with just under six minutes to play. The Gators were able to recapture the lead with 3:27 to play before Wooster ended the half on a 9-5 run, taking a two-point, 43-41 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Wooster opened the second half on a 21-8 run, opening a 15-point lead and never looking back, out-scoring the Blue and Gold 59-30 in the second stanza. For the game Wooster hit 15 of 34 three-point attempts, (44.1%) and 39 of 73 (53.4%) overall, while the Gators hit 41.8% (28 of 67) from the field and 5 of 15 (33.3%) from long range.

Ben Torsney (Morgantown, W.Va.) added nine points while Jimmy Savage (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) added seven points and seven rebounds in the losing effort. Hollihan pulled down eight rebounds to lead the team, while he and Savage each dished out a trio of assists.

Wooster put four players in double figures, led by Devin Fulk and James Cooper, who each scored 17 points while Tom Port and Tim Vandervaart each added 16 for the win.

The Gators are back in action on Saturday, January 14 when they host the Denison Big Red in the second game of a women’s/men’s double header at 4:00 p.m.
