Shooting 53.2 percent in the comforts of venerable Knights Gymnasium, Wartburg (10-2 overall, 3-1 conference) used an early 19-2 burst to grab a 21-6 lead in the first 11 minutes of the contest and was up 55-43 at the break. The Knights led by as many 24 in the second half.
Forward Taylor Phipps made a noteworthy effort for the Dutch (7-4 overall, 2-2 conference), hitting 8-of-12 from the floor and scoring a season-high 18 points while sophomore guard Zak Clark also had 18. Forward Keith Pedersen continued to make strides in his return from early season injury, sinking 6-of-8 and scoring 14 points in 20 minutes off the bench while guard Chris Nelson added 10. However Dutch leader Clint Driftmier was limited to a season-low seven points and six boards, although the latter total still topped Central’s rebounders. The Dutch were outboarded 38-29.
Central still managed to shoot 50 percent from the floor but gave up 12 3-point goals while hitting only 4-of-16 from long range. Wartburg placed all five starters in double figures, with guard Jason Steege delivering 20 points.
