Mass-Boston 98, Plymouth State 94

PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- — Sophomore Mark Doran (South Boston, Mass.) and junior Tony Barros (Dorchester, Mass.) combined for 49 points Tuesday evening as the University of Massachusetts Boston pulled out an exciting 98-94 overtime victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference men’s basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.

Doran finished with a game-high 26 points and Barros added 23 for the winners. Sophomore Amigo Paniagua (Santiago, D.R.) contributed 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds, and seniors James Hall (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Charles Yuan (Lynn, Mass.) chipped in with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Plymouth State got 23-point performances from senior Kevin Boutilier (North Andover, Mass.) and junior Mike Walcek (Dover, N.H.) Boutilier connected on 11-of-15 shots while grabbing nine rebounds, while Walcek hit 8-of-13 shots, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, while collecting a game-high 10 boards. Senior guards Mike Sullivan (Brookline, N.H.) and Brandon Boggs (Strafford, N.H.) added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

UMB had the advantage most of the first half, leading by as many as 11 points before PSU rallied to get the margin down to six points at the break (45-39). It was anyone’s game most of the second half until the Panthers pulled away to an eight-point bulge (72-64) with five minutes remaining in regulation.

The Beacons staged a rally of their own, outscoring the hosts 16-4 over the next four-plus minutes to regain the lead, 80-76, with 36 seconds on the clock. UMB hit six straight free throws in the final 36 seconds, but the Panthers managed to tie it at 86-86 on three pointers by Walcek and Boggs, a pair of free throws by senior Charles Gaddy (Hartford, Conn.), and a steal and lay-up by Sullivan as regulation time expired.

Walcek’s second three-pointer of overtime gave the hosts a 94-90 lead with three minutes left in overtime, but the Panthers didn’t score again. Yuan and Barros scored hoops for UMB to tie it at 94-all, and Hall and Barros sealed the win by making free throws in the final 12 seconds.

PSU, 9-4 overall and 2-2 in the LEC, returns to action Saturday with an LEC contest at Eastern Connecticut (3:00 p.m.) UMB, 7-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play, returns home to host Rhode Island College in an LEC game on Saturday (3:00 p.m.)
