Cortland State 74, Oneonta State 62

ONEONTA, N.Y. — Senior Frank Ranieri (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) scored 19 points and moved within 10 of the career 1,000-point mark as Cortland defeated Oneonta, 74-62, for its 10th straight victory. The Red Dragons are 10-1, their best start since a 10-1 opening to the 2000-01 campaign, and their win streak is the program’s best since an 18-game run in the 1999-2000 season.

Ranieri, currently 17th on the school scoring charts with 990 career points, also grabbed nine rebounds and handed out four assists in the victory. He made 8-of-15 shots from the floor. Senior Scott Taggart (Sidney Center/Franklin) finished with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds, 10 on the offensive glass.

Junior Dave Maggiacomo (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) scored 11 points, including 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range. He has scored in double figures in all 11 games this season despite coming off the bench each time. Senior Simon Skrelja (Hastings-on-Hudson/Hastings) and junior Dave Jutton (Red Hook) each finished with eight points and five rebounds and junior Rod Headley (Peekskill) scored six points and registered five boards.

Senior Sean Coffey (New Paltz) paced Oneonta (6-6, 1-3) with 17 points. Junior Jaysen Murphy (East Elmhurst/Robert Wagner) recorded 12 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots and sophomore Daniel Medina (Cortlandt Manor/Walter Panas) contributed 11 points off the bench.

Cortland led by as many as nine points in the first half and took a 29-22 lead into intermission. The Red Dragons led the entire second half, with the margin fluctuating between four and nine points most of the way. Ranieri’s layup with 5:26 left gave Cortland its first double-figure lead at 58-47. The advantage was at 10 points at 63-53 when Maggiacomo hit a three-pointer with 3:37 remaining, but a Medina layup at the 3:25 mark and a Eric Bratt (Roslyn) three-point play with 2:40 left drew the hosts within 63-58.

Following a timeout, Ranieri hit a layup with 2:13 left to push the lead to seven. Oneonta made one free throw on its next possession and Skrelja’s layup with 1:36 left gave Cortland a 67-59 lead. Murphy hit a layup with 1:25 on the clock to cut the lead back to six. Cortland, 7-of-16 from the foul line to that point, made seven of its last eight free throws, including four by Jutton, to seal the win.

Cortland shot 57 percent from the field in the second half and 45 percent for the game. The Red Dragons held a 47-26 rebounding advantage, 23-9 on the offensive boards.

Cortland continues its five-game road stretch with SUNYAC games at Plattsburgh Friday, Potsdam Saturday and SUNYIT next Tuesday before returning home to host Plattsburgh on Friday, Jan. 20.
