NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA — Junior forward Paul Pawlowski scored 22 points and junior center Dan Holbrook added 20 points and 10 rebounds as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team came from behind to defeat Eastern Connecticut State, 78-65, in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at the Tripp Athletic Center Tuesday evening.

Two second-half runs turned the tide. A 5-1 run just after the start of the second half allowed UMass Dartmouth to claim the lead. Holbrook, hit a lay-up and junior forward Stephane Abelard followed with a three-pointer to make it 43-42, Corsairs, with 17 minutes remaining.

Moments later, Geoffrey Richardson of the Warriors tied it at 45 with a trey. But the Corsairs scored the next 10 points to take the lead for good. Holbrook scored from point-blank range, drew a foul and added a free throw. After another basket by Holbrook, Pawlowski connected on a lay-up and a three-pointer to give the Corsairs the lead for good. ECSU never got closer than six points after that, and UMD stretched their lead to as many as 16 points, 71-55, with 2:24 to play.

“They outworked us in the first half, and we outworked them in the second half,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. “Rebounding is an effort stat, and we were out rebounded in the first half, 18-7, and it ended up 34-31. They also shot 61 per cent in the first half and 25 per cent in the second half and that is also an effort stat.”

Pawlowski had 22 points, making nine of 10 shots from the free throw line. Holbrook added 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Abelard added 13 points. The Corsairs limited Eastern Connecticut to seven of 28 shots from the field in the second half, and out rebounded them after the intermission, 24-16.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 8-5 and 2-2 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while ECSU fell to 4-8 and 0-4with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Western Connecticut State Saturday.
