East Texas Baptist 80, LeTourneau 72

LONGVIEW, TX — Another chapter of the LeTourneau University-East Texas Baptist University rivalry was written on Tuesday night when the Tigers prevailed 80-72 in men’s American Southwest Conference East Division basketball action at the Solheim Arena.
The YellowJackets (4-7, 3-6) were lead by the trio of Dusty Evers, Travis Bankett and Jay Burnett. Evers finished with 20 points and eight rebounds on 9-of-18 shooting from the floor. Bankett hits 4-of-5 three-pointers and finished with a season high 18 points and seven boards. Burnett had his best game of the season with a 12-point, 10-rebound performance, his first double-double of the season.
The Tigers (6-6, 6-3) held onto the victory in a game that featured 10 lead changes and seven ties. The ETBU big three of Cedric Isom, Chris Isom and Melvin Allen accounted for 59 points and 19 rebounds. Cedric Isom posted a double-double of 20 points and 11 boards while it was Allen who hit a big three-pointer with 3:46 left in the game that gave ETBU a seven point lead. Allen finished with 23 points on the night, but it was unheralded freshman Carlos Marbot who hit a three-point dagger with 2:06 left in the game to put the Tigers up by eight points. It was Marbot’s only points of the game.
The Jackets took their final lead of the game with 6:09 left on a dunk by Evers off a back door cut. Point guard Dewones Smith made the pass and finished with a game high five assists.
The Tigers shot 40.3 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the foul line. They forced the Jackets into 22 turnovers while committing just 12 of their own. The Jackets connected on 43.3 percent of their shots and made 15-of-21 free throws. LeTourneau held the edge on the boards, 44-37.
The YellowJackets are home on Thursday night at 7:30 against ASC-East Division rival #22 Mississippi College. The game can be heard online at www.tsrnsports.com.
