The Crusaders led by as many as 16 points in the second half before Concordia rallied. Joel McDonald’s three-pointer tied the game at 85 with seven seconds remaining in the second half. UMHB had a chance to win it but could not convert a three-pointer at the buzzer. CUA grabbed an 87-85 lead in overtime before UMHB scored the next five points to take a 90-87 lead. Valentino Maxwell’s bucket cut it to 90-89 with 1:05 to go and Sanora Baptiste hit one of two free-throws to tie the game at 90 with 14 seconds remaining. Patrick Oliver then scored with two seconds on the clock to provide the game-winner for the Crusaders and Concordia could not get a shot off on its final possession.
Brandon Gatlin led UMHB with a career-high 34 points and he hit 15-20 from the free-throw line in the victory. Patrick Oliver added a double-double for the Crusaders with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Justin Schwartz also reached double figures with 14 points for UMHB. Valentino Maxwell topped Concordia with 34 points and Joel McDonald scored 21 for the Tornados.
The UMHB men will continue their road trip with a 7:30 PM tip-off at Schreiner University Thursday night in Kerrville. The Crusaders will then return home to take on Texas Lutheran University in a 3:00 PM start on Saturday at the Mayborn Campus Center.
