In the opening game of the NEAC double-header the Lady Defender’s Jessica Doane conducted an impressive offensive display. Doane put up a game-high 22 points, pulled down six rebounds, grabbed six steals and dished out five assists in 36 minutes of play. Doane finished her day 4-for-13 from the field and 3-for-11 from beyond the three-point arc. Most impressive, Doane went 11-for-12 from the charity stripe while running the point for Baptist Bible.
The Wildcats were led by sixth-man Kate Lincoln (’08, Waterloo / Waterloo HS). Lincoln, who appeared in her third game of the season, finished with a team-high 11 points and tied teammate Amy Mason (’06, Amsterdam / Amsterdam HS) for a team-high eight rebounds in the game.
The Defenders drew 17 fouls in the game and went 18-for-21 from the charity-stripe. The Wildcats were held to two free-throws in the game as the Defenders committed just five total fouls. Additionally, Cazenovia’s Head Coach, William Motto, was assessed a technical foul in the first half of the game for unsportsmanlike behavior.
The Cazenovia men’s squad fell behind early as the Defenders opened the second game of the double-header with a 5-27 point run in the first nine minutes. Taking a commanding lead, Baptist Bible finished the first half up 21-41 over the Wildcats.
The Wildcats battled back to within eleven points at the 7:45 mark of the second half when Bryan Bishop (’06, Watertown / South Jefferson HS) recorded two of his team-high 14 points. Bishop, who brought the game to 42-53 with a layup, finished the game 6-for-12 from the field.
The Defenders finished the game with a 2-23 point run and dominated the inside as Bishop and the Wildcat’s center, Steven Zavackis (’07, Carthage / Carthage HS), both fouled out in the final minutes of play. Zavackis finished the game with four points, four rebounds and three blocks.
Josh Winans (’07, Afton / Afton HS) finished with a season-high 11-point night. Winans, who ran the point very effectively for the Wildcats, also finished with four rebounds and a team-high three assists.
The Defenders had five players finish the game in double-figures. Jon Konzelman finished with fifteen points and an eleven-rebound night to record a double-double. Josh Workman led the way with a team-high 17-point effort.
Both Cazenovia basketball squads are next in action on Sat., Jan. 14. They travel to Penn. St. Berks to take on the Nittany Lions in NEAC action. Game time is slated for 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM for the women’s game and the men’s game, respectively.
