Rutgers-Newark 59, New York City Tech 49

NEWARK, NJ — Senior guard Justin Carter (Paterson, NJ/Don Bosco Tech HS) scored eight of his game-high 13 points in the second half as Rutgers-Newark held off New York City College of Technology for a 59-49 non-conference men’s basketball victory in The Golden Dome.

Junior forward Jermont Horton (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) netted nine of his 11 points in the opening half as the Scarlet Raiders (9-3) powered their way to a 36-16 intermission lead.

But the Yellow Jackets (3-9) reeled off the first nine points of the second half as Rutgers-Newark did not score a point for the opening four minutes of the period. It took the Raiders eight minutes to chalk up their first field goal of the period.

Senior forward Danul Cabbagestalk (Brooklyn, NY/John Adams), who led the Jackets with 11 points and eight rebounds, sandwiched back-to-back baskets around a blocked shot to trim the Raider lead to 45-36 with 4:52 left, but City Tech would get no closer than eight points down the stretch.

Junior guard Otis Saylee (New York, NY/Seward Park) chipped in 10 points for the Yellow Jackets, who got a game-high eight assists from senior guard Clyde Forteau (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond’s).

Carter finished with four steals, four rebounds and three steals for Rutgers-Newark while senior forward Rico Thompson (Hillside, NJ/Hillside) came off the bench for nine points, five rebounds and two steals.
