Centre 67, Trinity (Texas) 50

DANVILLE, Ky. — Colonels rebound for 67-50 win over Trinity

Coming off a tough one-point loss to Southwestern University, Friday night, the Centre College men's basketball team bounced back with a 67-50 win over Trinity University, Sunday, Jan. 8, in Danville, Ky.

The Colonels, who entered the game as the only Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference team not to post a conference win, improve to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in the league. Trinity falls to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the SCAC.

Centre started strong once again, running out to an 21-8 lead at the 11:21 mark in the first half. The Tigers cut the lead to nine points, only to see the Colonels go on a 15-0 run to extend the lead to 38-14 with 7:30 remaining. During that run, Centre made all six of its shots from the floor.

Trinity fought back, using a 16-0 run to close the half and make the score 38-30 at the break. The Colonels missed their last five shots of the half and committed six turnovers in the last 5:58 to allow the Tigers to close within eight points.

The Tigers pulled within seven points (46-39) early in the second half, only to see Centre use a 12-2 run to push the lead to 17 points with just over 10 minutes to play. Trinity narrowed the lead to 15 points, but would get no closer as the Colonels went on to snap a seven-game losing streak against the Tigers.

Three Colonels finished in double figures led by senior center Reggie Magnusson's 18 points on 7 of 9 shooting. Junior forward Matt Jacobson scored 16 points on 5 of 12 shooting, including 4 of 9 from beyond the three point arc.

Sophomore guard Matt Nestheide added 12 points, four assists and four steals and senior forward Coy Zerhusen posted a game-high nine rebounds to go along with eight points.

Trinity's Andy Bates paced the Tigers with 15 points and three rebounds. Jay Riola added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists in the loss.

Up next for Centre will be the DePauw Tigers in Greencastle, Ind. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's double header and will start at 8 p.m. CST.
