Brockport State 81, Drew 70

WAHINGTON, D.C. — SUNY Brockport Sinks Rangers, 81-70

Jerry Cheves scored 26 points off the bench to give the SUNY Brockport an 81-70 victory over Drew in the consolation gave of the Catholic University Pepsi Classic. Bob Carella, David Cramer and Chris Lopez all scored ten points for the Rangers in the loss. The defeat drops Drew’s record to 6-7 while the Golden Eagles improve to 4-5.

In a fast paced match-up between two contrasting styles, the Rangers showed off their depth by having twelve players score and set a team season-high with 25 assists on the night. Unfortunately for Drew, the Golden Eagles shot 46% from the floor and 50% from three point range as they rallied in the second half to take the game. Drew led by three going into the break and controlled the game except for a three minute stretch early in the second half. The young Ranger squad, which got all but 38 minutes from under classmen, was stung by a 13-0 run by Brockport that swung the match in the Golden Eagles favor.

Sophomore Chris Lopez pacel the Rangers with ten points and junior Carella added another ten, but it was the Ranger bench that provided the majority of the production scoring 40 points in the game. Sophomore Pat Hickey had a solid performance, scoring seven points to go with seven assists. First-year Abdul Jalloh hit on three of four long range efforts to finish the night with nine points. Sophomore forward David Cramer had ten points as well while first-year Dennis Mayes recorded three steals.

The Rangers get back into conference action on Wednesday as they travel to face Delaware Valley at 8:00 before hosting Lycoming on Saturday at Baldwin Gym.
